Phototherapy Equipment for the Management of Neonatal Jaundice

Neonatal jaundice is a common condition caused by elevated bilirubin levels in the blood. While often mild, excessive bilirubin can pose serious risks if left untreated. Phototherapy equipment provides an effective, non-invasive method for managing this condition.

Phototherapy works by exposing the infant’s skin to specific wavelengths of light, usually in the blue spectrum. This light converts bilirubin into forms that can be more easily eliminated from the body. The process supports natural metabolism without the need for medication.

Modern phototherapy units are designed to deliver uniform light exposure while maintaining infant comfort and safety. Overhead lamps, light-emitting blankets, and mattress-based systems allow flexible treatment options depending on clinical needs.

Temperature regulation is carefully managed during phototherapy. Continuous monitoring ensures that infants do not overheat or become dehydrated. Hydration levels are closely observed, as increased fluid loss can occur during treatment.

Protective measures are essential. Eye shields are used to protect the infant’s eyes from light exposure, and regular skin assessments help detect irritation or dryness. These precautions ensure treatment effectiveness without unnecessary discomfort.
